Poetry Writer and Musical Spoken word Artist

Bio:
Multi Media Artist Shannon Kringen grew up in San Diego California and Whidbey Island Washington. She is a self taught poet, multi media visual artist with a background in Graphic Design. She has worked as a figure model in Seattle since 1992. She completed her BA degree in Arts and Literature from Antioch University in 2013. She sees her creative expression as a tool to connect with community and a way of increasing self awareness and tap into a deeper wisdom within.

Artist Statement:
I work with words in writing poetry and cameras and paint improvisationally. I am very kinesthetic and use my whole body when I create. Im very sensitive to sound and music and phrases pop into my head and I write them down and then “riff” off them. I like to say “Catch the Windsong Spiral Drive, Crack the Code, Left and Right node” my poems start with one phrase that I hear in my head then I start writing and adding from there and usually end up with metaphors and double entendres that surprise and delight me.

In my photography, I fall in love with shape, texture, and light while out wandering. I like to capture what is naturally there but in a way that abstracts it and allows the viewer to notice something new and different about ordinary physical reality. I carefully compose all my photos spontaneously as I am shooting, moving the camera angle until I see what looks like a balanced, dynamic composition.

In my painting, I allow my hands to move intuitively on the canvas creating shapes and textures that feel right. I repeat patterns and choose colors from somewhere beyond my thinking mind. I am very inspired by the repeating patterns I see in nature. Plants and animals move me a great deal.

I also created an art car called “Opal Moonstone” that is intricate patterns of Rhinestone that I hand crafted over the last 3 years. I was recently interviewed about my Multi Media Art by Seattle Magazine:

I am taping into my unconscious and go into a dream like state when I create art. My visual art music and poetry and video monologues are include an improvisational stream of consciousness that weaves it all together in one cohesive body of creative expression.

Here's my stream of consciousness essay for today and I know that a lot of people find me annoying but this is the way that I express myself so take it or leave it. Good luck to everyone ! I like to say be yourself no matter what they say. That's from a sting song I love called Englishman in New York ... Really wanting to figure out how to organize my photos and my videos and all my projects that I'm doing. Music, poetry, photos, videos, pet sitting, art modeling all of it, my artwork and all the things that I do for a living. I just kind of surf all these different waves and I guess that's my style. So maybe I should make a documentary film. Just documenting the random chaosness of my life. I don't know if I can really put together a linear story very well. Probably going to have to find other people that want to make a film with me, but the classic Goddess Kring style of making a movie would be to do it in my own strange improv chaos way!? And maybe the way that I share online already is me documenting my life and like my whole life is like an ongoing show and tell documentary anyway. But I do like the idea of actually trying to tell a story in a filmmaking way and make it a feature length with its own original music score and make one that's good enough to submit to film festivals and or screen in Seattle in a theater that I would rent. The Northwest film Forum has a theater that people can rent. Maybe there's other options as well. Would be cool to have a visual art show and a movie screening and share Multimedia creativity that I do. It would be interesting to have a show of my visual art and videos in a movie on my art car and then fill up an entire room of paintings and drawings that artists have done of me over the years like the finished fine art pieces that have been made in my likeness to show my work as an art model because I've been modeling since 1992. Although I'm doing less of that now and more of taking care of pets right now and also work with medical students as a standardized patient. Kind of trying to tell the story of my life in a linear way might be a challenge, especially for someone like me that has total improv chaos brain. I also like the idea of having other people interview me who like my show or like my art and interview me or I interview them about how my art affected them because my TV show it was mostly just me doing monologues by myself solo. So I was thinking that a departure from that would be to involve other people more and have dialogues or interviews with other people whether they interview me or I interview them just to kind of expand on the whole concept of the communication of me and the way I see the world and wanting to share some of my way of seeing the world with other people. I am on the autism spectrum officially in terms of mainstream psychological assessments. I don't always buy into all of that, but I have officially gone through testing and assessing of the way my brain works and they say I am on the autism spectrum. Of course it's not an exact science. Nothing much is these days, but it's good to know that my brain is unusual in some ways and I have a way of processing information that is usually not in chronological order and I have a poor working memory supposedly. But I think some of my neurodivergent traits actually serve me well in my art. I think the fact that I can do improv art. The way that I can is partly because my brain is non-linear and I see patterns and connect dots in my own kind of way and maybe this helps me create a unique style of art and poetry and music and painting and photography etc. So maybe if I do a movie I should just go with my strange style? My eccentric non-linear non-chronological order random chaos order. That's my style but I would like to actually tell a story with a beginning a middle and an end and that would be interesting and compelling and engaging the audience. But I guess what I really need to do is create something that I think is interesting that I love and trust that there's an audience out there for that. And if not, if it's completely not connecting with an audience, at least I will know that. I really am an eccentric person that doesn't quite know how to connect with an audience. And maybe that's okay too because every single person is totally unique and that's a literal fact. And maybe that's totally fine. We're all here together and yet we're all completely different at the same time.

I guess my main projects right now are work on making a film. A documentary about my life and my public access show. Write a memoir kind of book autobiography, creative book and keep working on music- basically keep writing poetry and publishing that and then turn it into music with Dave Flowers and modeling and photography and painting in my abstract style. I'm just making it up as I go. Maybe having goals. It doesn't even matter. Maybe just keep the free form improv going and just create as much as I can for my entire life and that is my purpose perhaps and share it with whoever wants to see it and learn as I go. I'm open to whatever interesting opportunities come my way and collaborating with other people on these multimedia projects. It does seem like my best work is mostly solo, but I have collaborated with some great artists when I model and the music I'm doing right now is a huge collaboration with another person and that is maybe a new thing for me to really collaborate well with another person. Maybe that's my autism where I work best by myself and that gets interpreted as a form of narcissism by some people and yet I feel most comfortable when I work. Mostly alone. And yet I do long to connect and collaborate with others. But only if I can really use my talent to the best of my ability and not feel like I'm watering it down or something or getting all shy and clamming up around other people. That's part of why I like to work alone because I'm not shy when I'm by myself. But when I work with other people I get like I'm a clan that's hiding in her shell and I don't know why I do that but I'm just really sensitive in a certain way and I need to relax and Bloom like a flower. Basically when I do the best art that I can do, I think that's way it seems anyway. And then people tell me don't overthink it but I love to think!

Opal Moonstone is an improvisational design with rhinestones on a 2010 Honda Fit. I am delighted to add colors and shapes when I get the urge. I am known in Seattle for painting onto shoes and hats, and giving my hand painted "KringWEAR" shoes to musician Tori Amos, I am known as "Goddess KRING" from public access TV in Seattle and this art car is my current big project. I am an experimental multi media artist. Some of my favorite artists that inspire me are: Antoni Gaudí, Yayoi Kusama, Gustav Klimt, and Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

dark and light thoughts

 

Basically I just feel like I need to be my whole self which is dark and light positive and negative multifaceted full of contradictions a little bit introvert a little bit extrovert a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll a little bit friendly and a little bit antisocial. I guess all of it is the real me a little bit Moody a little bit friendly, etc. Definitely an omnivore wanting to eat both plants and animals. Not trying to save the world but a little bit hero and a little bit villain. Maybe both at the same time simultaneously!

Yeah, suddenly it occurs to me once again. I still want to do my art and I still want to share it, but I think I'm burned out on thinking that I need to promote the heck out of what I do to make it a success just to prove that I'm not afraid of failure or success. When really? I want to do my music and my poetry and my art but I don't want to try to force it to become successful or like push the river. I want to just flow with the river so the idea that you make music and art and that's enough that you're enjoying it. It doesn't matter if it's popular or famous or you make money or whatever. I don't need to make money with my yard. I do my art for fun so now I want to let go again of needing certain external results but still come from a place of doing my creative things and sharing them and not worrying about the outcome whether it's failure or success because everyone just labels things anyway. And what really matters is that we're doing what we love, right, and that we're creating a ripple effect in the universe

I kept this laminated sign with my names of it from the parade yesterday As a souvenir..., I can use this for other display purposes and then I'm excited to set up a table to show the public, my poetry book and some of my visual art and a QR code for our music.. at the Wedgwood Art Festival and the fantagraphics book fair hot off the press as part of the art attack on the weekend of July 13th and 14th...

It also occurs to me that I should find a camera person that wants to follow me around and help me document some of the vents that I'm in cuz it's quite challenging to be the performer, the artist and the filmmaker at the same time that's documenting it! Wish I could clone myself and so I could film myself better. Although I'm really good at doing the monologues in a simple way but to document me from a distance, I'm probably going to need another camera person to help me out... And the friends that I'm working with on making this film are both busy so it's hard to coordinate with them so I might need to find somebody else to help do our documentary film.

Really pretty much in awe of this documentary about Val Kilmer's life. The most amazing thing about it is the way it's edited together. I imagine what a challenge it was to go through all of the home movies that he made and figure out how to tell a story and splice it all together from the past to the present into this one. Cohesive film. Really well done. Anyone who's reading this? Have you seen this movie? What do you think? I really loved it. Ive seen it twice so far. And then I think about doing my own documentary about my public access, TV show and different aspects of the unusual way in which I was raised etc. My life story basically it's a little overwhelming to think about, but I have hundreds of VHS tapes from my public access TV show and I've worked with hundreds of people as an art model literally and I wonder how many people have seen my TV show or at least used to watch it. And I think I have four people lined up to interview, but I haven't started any of the interviews yet... Then I would like to film me driving around in my art car or have somebody film me. A friend of mine has a drone. We might be able to get some aerial shots of me driving around in my art car and then we have the goddess Kring theme song literally that we can use in the movie... Dave Flowers It's a great sound engineer and music mixer and composer, and so we basically have the tools to score the movie with ordinal music we create - then I have my visual art and my poetry and my own current self. So there's so much potential for this movie to be pretty rich and interesting multifaceted and interesting story that we could tell which will hopefully inspire and touch people

we had a great trip! thanks for your support. i just made a new youtube video about it and will share more photos and videos and words on this trip experience! our road trip from seattle, to nampa idaho, lehi utah, loveland and fort collins colorado, amarillo texas, houston texas, waxahachie texas, bisbee arizona, easton wyoming, random small towns in new mexico, las vegas nevada, and twin falls idaho back to seattle! 4600 miles in 17 days! whew! my 2010 honda fit sport art car "opal moonstone" did amazing! i am so grateful to all the nice people who supported us and cheered us on! it was quite an effort driving 8 hours a day but worth it! you can still donate if you want and the money will go towards paying for the food and air bnb we stayed in etc. getting my oil changed on my car today etc. my car did amazing! my youtube is 'shannonkringen' dave flowers and me are also recording a new song about our road trip! find it on bandcamp "goddess kring" AND "interactive jack records" seattle! thanks. you can also support our art by buying my poetry book "kringonian pizzazz"

 I am at Elliott Bay Bookstore on Capitol Hill Seattle and it feels so good to see a magazine for sale in this establishment that has an article about my art in it! this is amazing! this is a dream come true! and it's so validating and so exciting and so fun and I'm hoping a whole bunch of people read the article and feel inspired by it in some positive way!!!! Thanks Brad Holden for interviewing me about being part of Seattle history I am completely thrilled and honored and happy to be part of this project of expression!!!! We are finishing our music CD tomorrow and we're releasing the "Kring Flowers" original song CD and in conjunction with my poetry book "Kringonian Pizzazz" and my trip to Houston Texas for the Art Car festival and parade! Listening to our "kring flowers" music on a CD that I made for my car while I drive! it's so fun to have your own music CD that you can sing along to... And it's funny because I have the kind of brain where I forget what we do after we do it... and so I need to listen to the CD that we made of our own music and memorize and sing along with it because I don't necessarily remember all the lyrics I wrote in my journal that we recorded... so I've got to learn the songs just like somebody else would have to learn the songs if it wasn't their own music!
